Salt: Nice for ice. Rough on Rugs.

Salt.  A great preservative for foods, but not for our carpets and rugs.  Salt has definitely helped melt away our snowy, icy winter.  Yet, despite our best efforts, we manage to track some of it inside…what can salt do to our floor coverings?

  • Create dark spots. Salt attracts moisture, which then attracts soil.

  • Make carpets buckle.  Salt weakens laminate and can make it wrinkle.

  • Cause discoloration. Salt is highly alkaline and damages colors.

Our recommendation?  To preserve your carpets and rugs this winter – have them steam cleaned in early March/April to remove salt and soil.  It’s worth it!
